Farmer-centered pesticide risk reduction education in Senegal: A novel, participatory approach

As pest pressures continue to intensify across Sub-Saharan Africa, many smallholder farmers are increasing their use of pesticides, including highly hazardous options, meet the market demands for high-quality fresh produce. Many these farmers, however, have not had access pesticide risk reduction training or participated in programs that enabled them protect themselves and families. Given risks posed by dried invisible though still toxic residues, new forms information realistic learning strategies required. This study combined innovative Adaptive Learner-Centered Education (ALCE) approach with Farmer Field School (FFS) model address need a rigorous program. hybrid method was piloted over two years project Niayes region Senegal. The findings demonstrate following 12-week course, this novel 20 farmer-facilitators educate train 236 other reduce select pesticides shorter restricted re-entry intervals, adopt protective mitigation practices. Through seasonal planning exercises, operationalized knowledge ways fit crop production needs protected Because ALCE-FFS process is grounded community-based needs, it can serve as an appropriate educational design framework practitioners working wide range geographic, sociocultural, political contexts.
